Aspiring major leaguer can bring the heat with both arms
Ryan Perez is a natural righty, but growing up his father knew his son the aspiring pitcher would have an advantage if he learned to throw with his left arm as well.
"I would grab something right-handed and try to throw it right-handed, but he would stop: 'No, no, no, no, put it in your left. Throw it with your left,'" Perez said.
His dad was on to something. Perez became an all-state pitcher in Illinois, and now - heading into his junior year at Judson University - he has an arsenal of pitches he can throw with either arm.
"Four-seam fastball both ways, change-up both ways, curve and slider both ways," he said.

Two months removed from Tommy John surgery, Kansas left-hander Wes Benjamin entered the Major League Baseball draft hoping a team would take a chance on his injured left arm.
The Texas Rangers did just that on Friday, drafting Benjamin in the fifth round with the 156th overall pick. Benjamin became the Kansas baseball program’s highest drafted player since KU coach Ritch Price arrived in Lawrence in 2002

9's & 14's @ Great Lakes Perfect Game Super 25 Regional
CRYSTAL LAKE (Joe Stevenson, NW Herald April 28) – Huntley's Kalish Player of Week
The Red Raiders' former closer, who was converted to a starter, came up big twice in a crucial week in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division race.
Kalish, who throws submarine style, won games against two other contenders in the FVC Valley, McHenry and Cary-Grove, to move to 4-0 for the season.
On Tuesday, Kalish allowed two hits and one earned run, while striking out six and walking one in a 12-5 victory over McHenry.
Kalish came back on Saturday, after Huntley had dropped division games to McHenry and C-G, and fired a three-hitter at C-G for a 5-3 victory. He struck out six, allowed three hits and two walks and retired 14 consecutive batters at one point in that game.
The victory put Huntley in a three-way tie for first with C-G and Jacobs.

CRYSTAL LAKE (Joe Stevenson, NW Herald April 28) – Athlete of the Week - Mike Borst, McHenry, JR.
The left fielder had 10 hits in the Warriors’ four wins for the week as they went 4-1, with three Fox Valley Conference victories.
Borst singled and stole second in the ninth inning Saturday, then scored on an error as the Warriors edged Dundee-Crown, 3-2, in nine innings. He was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI in that game.
CRYSTAL LAKE (Joe Stevenson, NW Herald April 15) – Josh Smith experienced the normal doubts anyone would have traveling the long road back from shoulder surgery.
Perhaps even more so given what Smith was accomplished while throwing baseballs really hard.

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Pro Player Academy was one of the few teams that was able to avoid rain and get a game in today at East Cobb for the 2013 17u WWBA National Championship. Simeon Lucas took advantage of the opportunity to show off his talents in front of a crowd of collegiate coaches and professional scouts, which he’s become accustomed to doing.
The 97th ranked prospect for the class of 2014 impressed the scouts again in the five-inning contest against the East Cobb New England Indians. Lucas went 1-for-2 with a single through the right side gap. He was also hit by a pitch and came around to score twice.
Pro Player Academy piled on the runs to win 12-3 just before another downpour came to wash away today’s remaining games. The coach of Pro Player Academy was happy to get the game at the East Cobb Complex in.
